3rd March Weekly Review

We have had another fantastic week of learning in Maple Class!

This week, children have created their own ‘fictional recipe’ based on ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine.’ They thought about what ingredients they would use to include within their own potion and then wrote a rhyme, to include rhyming couplets, alliteration and onomatopoeia. The children also used the ingredients within instructional writing.

For their Maths learning this week, Year 4 have continued to learn about perimeter of shapes, specifically the perimeter of a rectilinear shape and they have calculated the perimeter of a shape with missing measurements. Year 4 have now moved on to learning about fractions, understanding that a fraction is a part of a whole and recognising equivalent fractions. Year 3 have also started learning about fractions by considering what the ‘numerator’ and the ‘denominator’ parts of the fraction mean and how this relates to a ‘whole.’ They have been learning how to compare and order fractions.

For their DT learning this week, children have discussed the importance of hygiene when handling and preparing food. They conducted an experiment using water, pepper (acting as the germs) and washing up liquid to demonstrate that when a clean finger is placed in the peppery water, the pepper disperses. Lots of children commented that they would like to show you this experiment at home! Children also considered what information food labelling contains. They researched different smoothie labels and explained why they were attracted to a particular label and what information it gives.

We have looked at different artists this week and discussed the different style of art, for example geometric patterns from Matisse compared with soft watercolours used by Monet. Children have learnt about the Mexican artist, Diego Rivera and have looked at different art he has produced and have written their response to his artwork. Next week, the children will start to create their own mural, based on a particular Diego Rivera piece of art.
