Lower School - Year 1 & 2

  • English: Following the National Curriculum: Spoken Language, Reading (word reading and comprehension), Writing (transcription (including spelling and handwriting) and composition (including vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)).
  • Maths Year 1: Following the National Curriculum: Number (number & place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division and fractions), Measurement, Geometry (properties of shapes and position & direction).  Teaching children to use and apply their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding and solve problems runs throughout each programme of study.
  • Maths Year 2: Following the National Curriculum: Number (number & place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division and fractions), Measurement, Geometry (properties of shapes and position & direction), Statistics.  Teaching children to use and apply their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding and solve problems runs throughout each programme of study.
  • Science (year 1 of a 2 year cycle): Living things and their habitats, Use of everyday materials, Animals including humans, Plants, Forces, Investigations.
  • Science (year 2 of a 2 year cycle): Everyday Materials, Melting and freezing, Animals including humans, Plants and Living Things, How food is grown, Seasonal Changes.
  • R.E. (taught over a 2 year cycle): Signs and Symbols, Light, Special Places, Thanking God for Nature, Religious Leaders, Easy Questions - Difficult Answers, Belonging, Books and Stories, Christmas, Easter.
  • P.E.: Dance, Games, Gymnastics.
  • PSHE: SEAL.
  • IPC (year 1 of a 2 year cycle): Time Travellers (significant events), Freeze It! (changing and separating materials), Say Cheese (ICT & computing), Flowers and Insects, We Are What We Eat (food), Hooray.. let's go on a holiday! (the places people go).
  • IPC (year 2 of a 2 year cycle): History - People of the Past (significant people), The Magic Toymaker (toys and games), A Day in the Life (things people do), Science - Super Human (human body), Science - Greenfingers! (plants), From A to B (transport and travel).
