Upper School - Year 5 & 6

  • English: Following the National Curriculum: Spoken Language, Reading (word reading and comprehension), Writing (transciption (including spelling, handwriting and presentation) and composition (including vocabulary, grammar and punctuation).
  • Maths Year 5: Following the National Curriculum: Number (number & place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, fractions including decimals and percentages), Measurement, Geometry (properties of shapes & position & direction), StatisticsTeaching children to use and apply their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding and solve problems runs throughout each programme of study.
  • Maths Year 6: Following the National Curriculum: Number (number & place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, fractions including decimals and percentages), Ratio & Proportion, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry (properties of shapes & position & direction), Statistics.  Teaching children to use and apply their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding and solve problems runs throughout each programme of study.
  • Science (year 1 of a 2 year cycle): Animals, inlcuding humans - stages of growth, Earth, Sun & Moon, Light, Electricity, Dissolving & Melting, Conductors & Insulators, Properties and Changes of Materials, Weather Types, Rocks & Soils. 
  • Science (year 2 of a 2 year cycle): Light, Forces, Living Things and their Habitats, Animals, including Humans, Evolution and Inheritance. 
  • R.E. (taught over a 2 year cycle): Christianity, Buddhism, Religious Leaders, Religious Celebrations, Creation, Christmas, Rules for living, Light as a symbol, Ideas about God, Suffering.
  • P.E.: Dance, Games, Gymnastics, Athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.
  • PSHE: SEAL.
  • PMFL: French / Spanish.
  • IPC (year 1 of a 2 year cycle): The Great, The Bold and The Brave! (classical civilisations: Greece, Rome & beyond), Space Explorers (astronomy & space), ICT - 3D Designers (ICT and computing), Making New Materials, Weather and Climate, What a Wonderful World (the natural world).
  • IPC (year 2 of a 2 year cycle): Making the News (print, broadcast and online journalism), Moving People (migration), History - AD 900 (history of non-European societies), Science - Being Human (humans and other animals), Out of Africa (evolution and inheritance), The Holiday Show (location and tourism).
