Another week of amazing learning.
In English, we have continued to read Kensuke’s Kingdom. We have met Kensuke and discovered that he is a Japanese man who was washed up on the island during World War 2. Kensuke had saved Michael and his dog Stella Artois when he fell overboard that awful night and had been looking after him secretly until the day Michael lit a fire. After a near death experience with jellyfish, Kensuke took Michael to his cave, where he nursed him. In his broken English, Kensuke opened up to Michael and told him how he had arrived on the island. We wrote descriptions about Kensuke and his cave. We also thought about how Michael’s parents would have felt that morning when they woke up to discover their son and dog had gone missing. We wrote a persuasive text pleading for the whereabouts of their son. We then used this text to create an iMovie, broadcasting their worry and plea for help to find him.
In Maths, Year 5 have been continuing to learn about addition and subtraction. They looked at how to estimate answers to check calculations and to use the inverse to find missing numbers. They explored the written method to solve number problems. Year 6 learnt strategies and rules to carry out long multiplication and short division. They looked at patterns within this field. They also looked at how to use factors to divide with 2-digit numbers.
In Science, we continued to look at life cycles focusing on mammals and birds, exploring each stage of the development of their growth.
In Geography, we looked at Fair Trade and focused on the banana industry in St Lucia. We found out what Fair Trade means and how it benefits communities and the produce growers. We didn’t realise how big the banana industry was in the UK.
In PSHE, we explored respect looking at how to respect others and more importantly how to respect ourselves.
In PE, we have continued to learn and develop our football and basketball skills.
This week's Golden Book children are:
Vanessa for her amazing drama when creating a video for Kensuke's Kingdom and Hektor for his kindness and respect to help a new non-English speaking boy who joined Year 6 this week.

Home Learning
Our home learning is for children to learn their times tables on TTRockstars. This is monitored weekly. They also need to be accessing EDshed weekly, where they will learn to improve their spelling. The weekly spellings on EDshed are also learnt in school. Year 6 have maths home learning set on MyMaths. All children have been given their passwords. The children should also be reading daily and writing in their Reading Records.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Rackley, Mrs Morris, Mrs Clarke and Miss Rackley.
