In Literacy this week we have been looking at newspaper reports and how they are structured and written. We started the week with a hot write on Storm Eunice which hit the UK two years ago. We then had a look at real newspapers and identified their features. Finally, we read our focus text this term, ‘Escape from Pompeii’ which gave us some background into the devastating eruption in 79AD. We used time conjunctions to write a summary of the events that occurred.
In Maths, Year 3 measured perimeter in different ways. We used the 1cm measured squares around a shape to count the perimeter and also accurately measured each length of a shape, in cms, using a ruler, adding these lengths together to find the perimeter. We then found unknown lengths, using knowledge of the properties of 2D shapes, and used this to calculate the shapes perimeter. Year 4 have continued our learning on fractions this week. We started by looking at unit fractions and how these can be represented in different ways. We then looked at comparing unit fractions and how the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Finally, we looked at non-unit fractions and how the numerator and denominator are used to allow us to represent them.
In History we looked at the history of castles, how and why they were built and what features were constructed to make them excellent for defense. This was supplemented with a trip to Leeds Castle to look at these features in real life, and learn about the local history of this significant site. In PE we are learning dance, and this week looked at how we use space. We were inspired by the story of the Nutcracker and had to perform a motif showing us performing as different toys and how this would affect the way we moved in a space. In Art we were learning to master our use of sketching. We looked at the painting of the Girl with the Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, and how we could recreate his realistic portrait through detailed sketches of human eyes. We also had the chance to finish off our Batik painting project from last term by adding the coloured dyes to material to create our final patterns.
