🌟 This Week in Rowan Class 🌟
What a fantastic week we’ve had! From pig hearts to percentages, bird beaks to Mission Impossible dance moves - it has been a great week of learning!
🐷 English – Pig Heart Boy Begins!
This week we jumped into Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman, and it sparked some BIG conversations.
We learned that Cameron, our main character, has a serious heart condition and needs a transplant. With human hearts in short supply, doctors suggest using a pig’s heart instead — and suddenly his parents are in complete disagreement!
To understand Cameron better, we wrote detailed character descriptions, explored key scenes through drama, and held a lively debate about whether a pig heart should ever be used in a human. The children shared thoughtful, fascinating ideas.
➗ Maths
- Year 5 have been working hard on identifying percentages as fractions and decimals, and matching equivalent values. Lots of “aha!” moments this week 💡
- Year 6 completed a practice SATs week, giving them a chance to see what the papers look like and spot any areas to strengthen. Brilliant effort all round.
🐦 Science – Beaks and Adaptation
We became bird experts this week! Using different tools to represent beaks and a selection of “bird foods,” we investigated which beak shapes work best for different diets. There were some great discoveries and plenty of fun along the way.
🍽️ DT – Protein-Packed Plates
In DT, we designed meals that are high in protein. We explored a range of foods, compared nutritional values, and created dishes that would make any chef proud.
❤️ RE – Love and Jesus’s Teachings
Our RE lessons focused on love — what it means, how we show it, and how Jesus taught others to love.
We had some beautiful, thoughtful responses to the question:
“What does love mean to you?”
The children shared ideas about kindness, family, friendship, helping others, and showing care even when it’s difficult. It made for a really heartwarming discussion.
🎾💃 PE – Dance & Tennis
Our Mission Impossible dance is coming together brilliantly as we add more moves each week.
In tennis, we’ve been practising volley shots and holding rallies — some impressive control and teamwork on display!
💻 Computing – Diving into Databases
We continued exploring databases, learning how they work and why they’re so useful. The children are becoming confident digital detectives.
