Term 4, Week 1: Welcome Back

Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely break.

This week in Literacy we have started to read a story called Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. It is about a boy called Liam Digby, who is tall for his age and often mistaken for an adult. We have read 3 chapters so far and discovered it is quite funny. We have written predictions and planned and written a setting description for our cold write.

In Maths, Year 5 have been identifying thousandths as fractions and decimals. Identifying them on a place value chart and ordering and comparing decimals with the same number of decimal places. Year 6 have been learning how to compare and order fractions, decimals and percentages. They have looked at how to partition percentages to find the percentages of amounts, eg, 35% of 280, you can find 30% and 5% by finding 10% which is 28. 28 x 3 = 84. To find 5% you halve 10% which is 14. Then add 84 and 14 together which equals 98. So 35% of 280 = 98.

In Science this week we created an information text about The Solar System. Our topic is called Space Explorers and we will be studying Earth and Space this term and Term 5. We have learnt lots of facts already and are looking forward to all the links to other subjects: Art, DT, History.

In DT we have started to design an image to create a 3D model of the solar system using Tinkercad.

In RE, we explored sacred and special places and discussed what this means to us.

In PE on Monday, the children started their dance unit with the PASS coach. This is also linked to our topic and the children were amazing in their groups as they put together moves for a volcanic eruption. I can't wait to see how they develop over the next few weeks.

In History, we have explored why people used to believe that the earth was flat. We then studied the evidence for the earth being a sphere.

Just a little note from Mr Bowles: I am so proud of Rowan this week. They are really beginning to take charge of their learning and have produced the most AMAZING Solar System poster (many of which were produced at home). It feels me with immense pride to see that children are enthused by their learning – keep it up!
