Week ending 9th October 2026

This week in Maple Class we have been learning about how to keep our teeth healthy and why this is important, especially to Stone Age Man.

We have been reading more of the class text, The Cave Explorers by Kate Winter.  The children listened well and asked some really in depth questions about the Lascaux caves and what was discovered there.  Then in literacy, we have revisited the features of a newspaper and how they are used to support the reader to locate and find information.  We discussed what we know about the story so far and how we can pick out specific facts from the book to use when we write our own articles.   The children then created basic ideas that they will include in their newspapers reports.

In numeracy, Year 4 were asked to define the difference between a mental strategy and a written strategy.  The children were asked if they could explain how their knowledge of 2 + 4 = 8 can help them solve problems associated with those digits in the 10’s, 100’s and 1,000’s (eg. 2,000 + 4,000 = 8,000). We used part-whole, bar models and number lines to show how these strategies can help them build a mental model to solve calculations. Year 3 have been introduced to finding the next multiple of 10 using a 100 grid. They started with 2-digit numbers to assess how confidently they could do this.

Enjoy the weekend.
