This week the children have continued their learning from the last few weeks and have slowly come to the end of some of the units of learning for this term.
In Literacy, the children have continued their learning of the story ‘The Way Back Home’. They had a discussion and a slight debate around the statement ‘The boy should stay on earth and try to forget the Martian in space'. The children thought about whether this was something very nice to do or not, once they thought about their ideas and whether they agreed or disagreed, the children were able to explain their ideas and the reasons behind them. They then used their knowledge of the story to sequence the events of the story. This was then used again for the children to think about changing parts of the story to make it unique to each individual child. The children drew their changes in a story map, which they used to help them write their own versions of the story.
In Maths, the children have continued learning about time. They began the week with pictures of clock faces and the children had to identify the o’clock and half past times. The children then learnt about the different hands and drew these onto some clocks with written times. The children found it a little difficult to remember the positioning of the minute and hour hands when telling time to the hour and half past the hour.
In Music this week, the children learnt how to play a tuned percussion instrument. The children also learnt and practised sharing some scales – a sequence of notes that move up then down and then arpeggios (a sequence of notes that move in up and down leaps) on their tuned percussion instruments.
In Geography, the children learnt about travel agents and the importance of these in the past if people wanted to book to go on holiday. They created their own passports and role played being in a travel agents and wanting to book a holiday.
In Art, the children painted the sculptures they had made, they thought carefully about the different parts of their sculpture and how they could use colours to represent these different parts.
In DT, the children began the challenging task of measuring, cutting and attaching the axles to their vehicles.
In RE, the children learnt about how important it is to think in a positive way, so they chose individual children from the class and thought about one positive thing about them. They then created a certificate for this other person to celebrate what makes them special.
In Computing, the children continued using Scratch Jnr to develop their understanding of algorithms. They were given an algorithm with a few errors in it. The children then worked collaboratively to solve the problem (debug) in the given algorithm.
In PE, as we have come to the end of our PE units, Ivy Class and Holly Class played a game of cricket. This developed some of the skills the children have been learning this term. Ivy Class won the game by 10 more points than Holly.
In Science, the children used their results from the aeroplane flights last week to write a conclusion explaining which material they used and how effective it was for a paper aeroplane.
Have a wonderful weekend, we look forward to seeing you on Monday for the last week in Ivy Class.
