Term 5, Week 4 (16/5/25)

A massive well done to all of our Year 6 for completing their SATS this week, with a positive attitude. They all tried their best. Well done to Year 5 for a change to their routine and supporting the Year 6.

This week the timetable was changed to support the Year 6 SATS. Year 5 learnt the Greek myth Daedalus and Icarus. They performed in role play and had discussions about the myth. We used our knowledge of 3D shapes and nets to make 3D shapes which was linked to Pandora's Box. We also partook in a team building challenge called The Sky's the Limit. We had to create the tallest tower using newspapers and Sellotape but we couldn't use scissors! It had to be able to stand alone for 1 minute without falling. Much fun was had – well done to the winners.  We also explored 2D shapes and their properties by drawing lots of different lines on paper and then identifying the shape we created using a colour coded key for it.

In Science, we made sundials to see how the Ancient Greeks told the time. We used a paper plate and drew the hours on it. We then tested it in the playground by making observations at regular intervals to see the shadow on it. It must have been really difficult in Ancient times if it was not a sunny day.

In History, we continued to find out about the Viking invasion with a focus on the Lindisfarne raids. We discovered why Lindisfarne was a target and why the raids took place.

In Computing, we looked at investigating and evaluating the features of programming software. We continued to use Kodu. This is a great app to learn how to code a game.

In PE, we have continued to focus on cricket. The children have really enjoyed playing this and developing their sending and receiving skills. Next week we will end the term with a whole class cricket match.

We ended the week with a visit to Mote Park for the morning. It was an amazing morning, we were so proud of everyone. They engaged with all activities: cricket, football, play area and parachute games. They all got along together and most importantly had fun after a challenging week. We finished the afternoon off with a session in Forest School, some sporting events and a quiz. A great end to the week.

Next week in Art we will design and make out own Greek pottery.
