Week beginning 20th November

In Literacy this week, we have been looking at a range of poems from the Rhythm and Poetry collection by Karl Nova. We have looked at how rhythm, rhyme and beat has been used and how it can enhance the performance of a poem. Children had the opportunity to perform poems to a beat and looked at iambic pentameter as well as reading some Shakespeare.

In Maths, Year 6 the children have been finalising their learning on fractions by finding fractions of amounts. They have also been working on their arithmetic skills. Year 5 have also been learning about fractions with a focus on adding and subtracting mixed fractions and improper fractions. We have also been using this knowledge to help add fractions with the same and different denominators. We used our times tables knowledge to ensure the denominators are the same so it is easier to add.

In History, we have been learning about Islamic medicine the Early Islamic Empire. We discussed the impact of Al-Zahrawi's creations and findings on modern medicine. Many surgical tools he invented are still used today along with operations he pioneered.

In PE, we are beginning to learn how attack and defend in tag rugby. The children are becoming more confident working as a team and are learning to communicate effectively. We also looked at fitness and how different exercises work different body parts and the effect it has on heart rate. This week, we also focused on the groups of muscles involved in different exercises. We were performing sit-ups, push-ups, planks and burpees.

In Science this week, we discussed how our body changes as it goes through the life cycle. We focused on the changes that happen during puberty and how we can keep our bodies clean and healthy.

In RE, we have been looking at equality and what religion can teach us about treating people equally. This week we looked at what St Peter and the Roman Centurion story can tell us about equal treatment. In PSHE, we looked at setting SMART goals for the short, medium and long term.

In Art, we have looked at Futurism and created Artwork in the same style.
