It has been a busy first week back, but the children have loved starting their new Literacy text: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have read the first few chapters of the book and started the week debating whether Charlie is deserving of a Golden Ticket. We then looked at writing features for character descriptions and created characters which suited their names. Have a look at Cedric Lightfinger and Hermione Wantalot in the images.
In Maths Year 4 have continued learning about decimals. We have looked at how decimals and fractions over 10 and 100 can be added together and how whole numbers can be partitioned in different ways to make 1. We ended the week by completing a mock Multiplication Check, please make sure you are practicing at home - the test will take place in the first two weeks of Term 6. Year 3 revisited fractions, using multiplication and division to find equivalent fractions. We understood that to find an equivalent fraction, what you multiple the numerator by you have to also multiple the denominator by. We then found which times table both the denominator and a numerator of a fraction were in and used this to divide them to find another equivalent fraction. We moved on to adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, recognising that the denominator does not change and the numerators are added together. Finally, we worked systematically to find different ways to make a whole with fractions.
In our Geography learning we looked at different types of maps and how they have changed over time. We looked at simple maps like maps of the school and drew maps of the classroom, before moving on to looking at OS maps and online maps. In DT we will be making our own kites this term. We started looking at different designs and materials that would make the best kites. In Science we are looking at forces. We experimented by observing how objects move on different surfaces and seeing if we could make conclusions as to which surfaces created the most friction.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Mr Saunders, Mrs Hendry and Miss Parkes.
