Term 6 Week 5

In Maths, Year 3 understood the new terms parallel and perpendicular and identified these sets of lines in 2D shapes. We described 2D shapes by their number of sides, vertices and how many sets of parallel or perpendicular lines they have. We also identified if they had any lines of symmetry and if these were vertical or horizontal. We then identified polygons and created these using Geoboards. Finally, we finished the week describing and creating 3D shapes, identifying how many vertices, faces and edges they have. Year 4 have been looking at statistics and data handling this week. We started the week looking at how we can use graphs, tables and tallies to represent and compare data, and how can they can be used to answer comparison questions. We then moved on to looking at bar graphs and line graphs and how we can collect data and construct our own graphs, and interpret time graphs.

In Literacy, we explored a variety of narrative poems and used different strategies to engage the reader, when reading the poems aloud. We used Michael Rosen’s retelling of poems to inspire us to use body language alongside different voices to bring poems to life. We had a go at creating our own narrative poems all about mashed potatoes! Although it was a tricky task, some of us created great rhyming poems.

In History, we made comparisons between daily life in Ancient Athens compared to daily life in Ancient Sparta and created speeches explaining which state we would have preferred to been a part of and why. Many of us favoured being Athenian, due to being able to learn music and art and being able to visit markets and watch plays. Although some of us felt outraged that only boys could attend school! Others felt they would have preferred the strict regimented routine of life in Sparta where training and exercise was of high importance! Ask your child which state they would have preferred and why.  In Science, building on from our learning about the skeleton, we identified the skeletons of a range of different animals, using our knowledge of their features such as legs, wings, fins and beaks. We were amazed to find that some animals have a skeleton outside of their body- an exoskeleton to protect them from predators. In Art, we created our own digital piece of art in the style of David Hockney. We pulled together everything we have learnt this term and created art using technology, just like David Hockney. In Computing, we showcased our stop frame animations and celebrated our hard work this term. Well done everybody!

Please note- next Tuesday 7th July will be our final swimming lesson for the year. Please ensure your child has their swimming kit with them so that they can join in.

Have a wonderful weekend,
