Another fabulous week in Walnut Class!
In Maths, Year 3 consolidated their understanding of fractions, recapping how to find equivalent fractions using multiplication and division, how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and how to find unit and non-unit fractions of an amount. We finished the week working collaboratively to put all of those skills to the test through problem solving.
Year 4 have moved on to looking at money. We started the week with some retrieval of the value of different coins and notes. We then converted between pounds and pence and looked at ways of partitioning money. We used this to compare and order different amounts of money. We ended the week by looking at solving problems involving money.
In Literacy, we dived deeper into Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We created diary entries in role as one of the five lucky children and used our senses, alongside our feelings, to describe what being in ‘The Chocolate Room’ would be like.
In Computing, we compared painting with painting on a digital device, considering which method was suitable for this purpose. Many concluded that you need lots of patience when using the trackpad on a laptop to draw but many preferred using a digital device as you ‘undo’ mistakes more easily. In Geography, we explored different OS map symbols and found some of these located on Maps of Maidstone and its surrounding areas. We discussed different symbols that we have seen such as a large P for parking and WC for public toilets. In Music, we explored call and response, using the ‘Boom Chicka’ song. Please ask the children to teach this to you, they are fabulous at it! We also created Ostinatos using a range of 3 notes on the Xylophone. In Science, we explored contact and non-contact forces using magnets. We carried out an experiment using thread, a paperclip and a magnet and found different ways to make the paperclip move using the magnetic force. The children were very excited to get the paperclip moving and rotating in many different ways!
We are rewarding our avid Walnut readers with reading trophies. The more reading carried out at home (and signed for in Reading Records) the more likely the children are to receive a trophy! Finally, lots of children are borrowing goggles at the swimming pool. Please can we ask that if your child wants to wear goggles that they bring along a named pair as part of their swimming kit. The pools supplies are running out fast! Thank you for your continued support.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Daniells and Mrs Ali
