Term 6 Week 4

Oh my goodness, what a hot and sticky week we have just had. Despite the heat the children have been incredibly resilient and have still tried their hardest to focus on all the learning happening in class. We have tried to encourage the children to stay as calm as possible as this would help them to stay cool in the classroom. In amongst all the heat, the children have begun practising their lines for our class assembly on 3rd July. We look forward to seeing lots of you at our assembly. Also if anyone is available to help Ivy Class walk to St Martin’s church on Wednesday 1st July in the afternoon please let me know as soon as possible.

English:

In English this week, the children have continued to think about how the crayons are feeling in our story The Day the Crayons Quit. They have also recapped some previous learning from earlier in the year to think about adjectives. The children used adjectives to describe the crayons in the story and then used this to describe a picture at the end of the story. They have also thought about adding suffixes -ing and -ed to the ends of words. The children looked at the root word and thought about how these endings changed the words into the present and past tense.

Maths:

In Maths this week, the children have been learning about position and direction. The children learnt the language on, under, above, between, next to, in, behind and in front. They used this language to describe where different items had been placed. They then had a go at following some instructions to place pencils and shapes in given positions. Their learning then moved on to learn about turns, the children learnt the language full turn, quarter turn, half turn and three-quarter turn. The children explored moving shapes to show these different turns. They found it helped to have 4 dots at different points to encourage them to see the final positions.

Music:

In Music this week, the children learnt about singing in an echo, they learnt a new song and then worked in small groups to echo sing with each other. Initially the children weren’t keen on echoing each other but as they became more familiar with the song this anxiety over singing in front of everyone soon disappeared.

Science:

In Science this week, the children consolidated their previous learning about life cycles. They sequenced the life cycle of a frog and then explained the changes that happened at different stages. The children thought carefully about how the frog grew up from frog spawn, into tadpoles, froglets and finally frogs.

Art:

In Art this week, the children continued to learn about the artist Picasso. They thought about how Picasso had used shapes in a lot of his paintings. They used these ideas to create some of their own self-portraits. Some children used actual shapes to draw round, whilst others loosely drew the shapes to represent different facial features.

History:

In History this week, the children thought about all the events in Queen Victoria’s life. They learnt about important events that happened at different stages. The children then had pictures of some of these events and worked collaboratively to create a timeline of her life.

Computing:

In Computing this week, the children used some of their learning from Maths about turns to support them with their instructions and directions for the beebots. The children thought about the algorithm they would need to get their beebots to draw a square. They then tested this out using actual beebots and online beebots.

RE:

In RE this week, the children learnt about the Christian event of a baptism. They looked at some baby photos of their peers and tried to work out who the babies were, then they learnt about what happens during a baptism. As part of their RE this week the children also learnt about the important symbols used within a Baptism ceremony.

Have a wonderful weekend. Please let one of the Ivy team know if you’re able to help with walking us to the church on Wednesday afternoon.
