Term 5 Week 5

In Maths this week, Year 3 moved on to look at money, recapping their knowledge of different coins and making different amounts. They converted pence to pounds, understanding that 100p makes £1 and used the £ and p signs accurately. We finished the week with a visit to the 'shops' where they added two or three items together to find the total amount spent. Year 4 have continued looking at money. The children looked at methods for adding different amounts of money, including converting pence to pounds and pence. They also looked at how to use subtraction to find amounts of change. Finally, the children combined all of their knowledge and looked at problem solving questions which required more than one step to solve. Please remember all Year 4 children will be sitting their multiplication check in the first weeks back after half term so make sure to keep practicing over the holidays.

In Literacy, the children concluded their learning on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl by creating the ending to a story about Tom, the lucky winner of a ticket to the chocolate factory. They used accurately punctuated fronted adverbials, noun phrases and paragraphs within their writing. Well done Walnut Class for being so enthusiastic and creating amazing pieces of writing this term!

In Geography, the children located rooms, toilets and play areas in Park Way and recreated a map of the school. They identified human and physical features in Maidstone and plotted these on a pre-drawn map, using map symbols where necessary. In PE, the children pulled their football knowledge and skills together, with some Walnut members leading drills/games for their peers. In DT, the children designed and created kites, using hand-saws responsibly to saw wooden doweling to accurate lengths. They persevered when manipulating their recycled kite sails to fit the length of the doweling.  They had great fun flying these at Mote Park and evaluated how they could improve them to make them even better next time.

Have a great half term break. See you for the start of our final term, Term 6, on Monday 1st June.
